Community Visits
Are you interested in employment opportunities under the Northern Ontario Grant Assistance Program, but aren't sure if life in Northern Ontario is right for you?
If you decide to visit one of the communities listed in the Vacancy Report, you can meet the ministry's community representative (or designate), tour the facilities, meet your professional colleagues and see if the lifestyle suits your needs. NOGAP’s community assessment visits facilitate your visiting a community by reimbursing travel and accommodation expenses that you (and your spouse) incur.
To participate in the community visit program, you:
- must be registered with your profession's governing body in Ontario, where such a body exists; or
- provide evidence in writing that you are eligible to obtain a certificate of registration within one year of the visit date, subject to the
rules and regulations of your profession's governing body of Ontario.
Here's how to apply
The program will reimburse travelling and accommodation expenses for you (and your spouse) only if you have obtained prior written approval
from the program administrator. Contact the representative for the community in which you are interested to arrange the appropriate interviews.
(The names of community representatives are listed in the Vacancy Report.)
You are encouraged to arrange several interviews during the same
trip. The number of nights of hotel accommodation reimbursement will be based on the number of interviews and distance between communities.
A second trip to the same area(s) will not be approved. You are responsible for arranging your own appointments, travel and accommodation for
the community visit.
You must submit your itinerary and a letter of invitation from the community contact identified in the Vacancy Report in order to obtain
written approval from the program administrator before you make the trip. Any expenses not approved in writing by the program administrator
before the trip will not be reimbursed. The request should be forwarded to the program administrator at least one month before the visit is
scheduled to take place.
Expenses covered
Subject to prior written approval, the program will reimburse the following expenses:
Travel
Train, bus, airfare, car rental or personal vehicle costs within Ontario or from the nearest point of entry into Ontario (Winnipeg
from the west and Montreal from the east). Reimbursement for travel will be calculated on the least expensive mode of travel (economy
airfare or use of a personal vehicle). The kilometre rate reimbursed for use of a personal vehicle is 30.5˘/km.
Accommodation
Accommodation expenses justifiably required to attend scheduled interviews (cost of hotel or motel only). Single occupant costs unless
accompanied by spouse. Claims for reimbursement must be submitted to the program administrator within 90 days of the date of travel to
be eligible for reimbursement. Claims received after 90 days will not be paid. Expenses not covered include: travel to Ontario from other
provinces or countries, meals, personal long distance telephone calls, relocation costs and expenses related to children are not reimbursed.
